Changes to Traffic Near Atlantic Yards

It isn't clear how this will affect Fifth Avenue, but we thought we would pass this information on. Prospect Heights Patch is reporting that yesterday, new traffic patterns were implemented along Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues, as well as Pacific Street, which includes reversing traffic on Pacific Street between Flatbush and Fourth Avenue.

It sounds like residents are worried that this will cause more traffic on Third Avenue. We wonder whether it will reduce or increase traffic on Fifth?

Get the full details at Prospectheights.patch.com.

Seventh Avenue in the Shadows?

For those who have lived and/or worked in Park Slope for more than a decade, it is always shocking to see Fifth Avenue referred to as the neighborhood's "main shopping district" and Seventh Avenue being "in the shadows" of Fifth. Not long ago, it was just the opposite!

So, we post this link to Time Out New York's article not to promote Seventh Avenue (although the stores listed are ones we do use, from time to time) but to mark it as a moment in time. My, how things have changed!

Happy 7-11 Day!

Today is July 11th (7/11) and when we said that date to ourselves yesterday, we wondered whether 7-Eleven was doing anything special to celebrate its own namesake day on the calendar.

The answer...is YES!

Our very own 7-Eleven (520 Fifth Avenue) will be celebrating with Free Slurpees, $.50 Hot Dogs and food samples all day long!

It looks like 7-Eleven has birthday deals, as well. You can view them here, although we aren't sure if they are valid at every location.

See you at the Slurpee machine!

Recent Changes Along Fifth

Yesterday was not a good day to be walking outside. Reminder: do not go on long walks when there is an ozone alert.

Still, we powered through and here is what we found along the BID (Fifth between Dean and 18th Street):

  • 487 Fifth Avenue is now Vivi Nail Salon

  • Madison Rose has closed its Fifth Avenue location.

  • Blueprint Cocktail Bar (194 Fifth Avenue) looks about ready to open, although according to Here's Park Slope, it has been been close to opening for a couple of months.

  • Fresh on Fifth (488 Fifth Avenue) has posted a "Going out of Business" sign.

  • NG Designer Shoes (586 Fifth Avenue) is closed and vacant.

Overall, there was less change on the avenue this time than we usually see on our monthly stroll. However, we did notice at least 5 storefronts that appear to be under renovation, so the August update could be very interesting.

Tonight: Rolie Polie Guacamole at Dancing Under the Stars

As we mentioned previously, this year's Dancing Under the Stars runs on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Tuesdays are for adults (although the kids really danced up a storm last night) and Wednesdays are special, just for kids. Tonight, at 6:00 pm, enjoy the sounds of Park Slope's Rolie Polie Guacamole.

If you have children, bring them down for some dancing (and hopefully wear them out so that they go to bed early). If you are unfamiliar with the band, check out the video, below, courtesy of Park Slope Parents.
