Fashion on The Other Fifth

Fifth Avenue celebrated its last Summer Strolls event with a Fashion Show. The stage was set outside Tabeel Aromatherapy Gifts and Salon. Tabeel's idea was to showcase the many beautiful designs that can be found on the The Other Fifth! And what a great show!  Here is a glimpse of what we saw, which boutiques participated and where you can go to get those and similar items.

On the Catwalk were Petrune, Eleven Boutiques, Tabeel Aromatherapy Gift and Salon and Goorin Bros.

Tabeel's Aromatherapy Gifts and Salon

Tabeel not on 5th Ave!
Tabeel was the inspiration behind the Summer Strolls Fashion Show. She has owned her store at 76 Fifth Avenue for 20 years! Her store is awash with scented candles, bath and body essentials, soaps and essential oils.

Tabeel also sells apparel through her store and website and at the 5th Ave Fair! Here are a few of her outfits on the catwalk! Many of them are versatile, so you can change the dress into a skirt, for example.

Andrea
Andrea and Monroe elegantly hit the runway, both sporting different outfits but both wearing cut price designer pieces and affordable items. I don't know how Andrea managed to hand that bag back!

In the Vintage store you can find Abbie, who will assist you in putting an outfit together to suit your price range and style. The Consignment store will buy, trade and sell clothes and accessories. Liz is the Owner of the two stores. Eleven Consignment Boutique located at 70 5th Ave and Eleven Vintage Boutique at 71 5th Ave.

Goorin Bros.

Andrew and Claren really fell into character on the runway. Claren's bowler hat was a hit with the audience. In fact, the Team in Goorin have a knack for finding you the perfect hat for your head. Situated near Berkeley at 195 5th Ave there is an assortment of beautifully made hats for men, women and children and for all occasions. Bringing history back with hats.

Petrune Brooklyn

Petrune sells classically made vintage clothes but specializes in one of a kind hand made items as well. As you can see, Emma looks stunning in both outfits on the runway. They were timeless, beautiful pieces. Visit Petrune and you see they always have a fantastic window display; it's impossible to walk on by. Petrune is located near President Street at 233 5th Ave.

A final note: Thanks again to Tabeel and her team for organizing, The Old Stone House for the sound equipment and Mark Caserta, BID Executive Director, for the stage and background work.

See you next year at the Summer Strolls!

Rosmersholm at OSH

Coming up in just over one week at The Old Stone House:

Random Access Theatre presents a riveting new adaption of Henrik Ibsen’s haunting and poetic masterpiece Rosmersholm.

Hailed by critics to be Ibsen’s greatest work, Rosmersholm is a psychologically thrilling love story of an unlikely pair of passionate social progressives. Former pastor John Rosmer has renounced his faith following his wife’s suicide and adopted an idealistic humanism that he shares with an unconventional, strong-willed young woman, Rebecca West. But as John and Rebecca’s political crusade evolves and their relationship deepens, shameful secrets from the past threaten to destroy their love and everything they hold dear.

Emotionally charged and politically relevant, Rosmersholm examines the challenge of living out our convictions in the face of harsh social realities and our buried past. Featuring a new edit of Ibsen’s text by Katherine McDonald and directed by Artistic Director Jennifer Sandella, this unique site-specific production will run from September 4th-14th at the beautiful Old Stone House in Park Slope, allowing the audience to intimately experience this stunning tale in a gorgeous salon from the proximity of a tea guest.

Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street
When: September 4th-14th, Thurs-Sun, 7:00PM.
Tickets are available via randomaccesstheatre.com/

We also want to thank Erika Clark (BID Board Secretary and Summer Stroll photographer), Joanna Tallantire, Paul Molnar (BID President, owner of South), The Old Stone House, Piper Theatre, the Antique Automobile Association of Brooklyn and South Brooklyn Shakespeare for helping to make this summer season on 5th so great.

Eye Care for Kids at Park Slope Eye

Our friends at Park Slope Eye have added a new member to their team: a pediatric eye care specialist! Another great example of our small, local businesses meeting the needs of local residents:

Park Slope Eye has responded to the demand for superb pediatric eye care and has added Dr. Jessi Lee to the team. Vision is the dominant sense in learning and development and Dr. Lee is passionate about the life-long benefits that comprehensive vision care can provide for your children. Dr. Lee joins us after completing a year long residency program focused on Pediatrics and Vision Therapy at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. In addition to her regular pediatric care during residency, Dr. Lee completed close to 200 additional hours of continuing education at meetings and workshops focused on pediatric care. Her areas of specialty training include learning-related visual problems, strabismus, amblyopia, sports vision, traumatic brain injuries, and special needs populations. She is skilled in working with patients of all ages including infants, toddlers, and school-aged children.

DNC in Brooklyn

You might notice that there is a lot of fuss going on around the Barclays Center this week. Representatives of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) are in town to assess whether Brooklyn can act as host of the 2016 presidential nominating convention.

The Barclays Center is certainly a great venue for the event and commercial corridors like Fifth Avenue are close-by and offer a much better experience than the type of Macaroni Grill and Cheesecake Factory settings you find around other arenas. We're a natural to host this important event!

The only question is whether Brooklyn has enough close-by hotel rooms. To that we say, "Who sleeps during a presidential nominating convention?"

Major Changes To Fifth This Week

A couple of long-time Fifth Avenue institutions are closing this week. We want to take a moment to recognize their importance:

- Excelsior Bar (390 Fifth Avenue): Sadly, they served their last drink last night. Excelsior has been an anchor in the community and a key organizer of Brooklyn Pride for many years. We wish the owners lots of luck and we hope they can find a space to reopen soon, nearby or right on Fifth Avenue.

- M&S Prime Meats (312 Fifth Avenue): This old-time Italian sandwich shop/deli/butcher has been on Fifth Avenue in some form or another since the 1940's. We are told by the staff that Thursday, August 7th will be their last day in business, as the owner (Mel) has some health challenges that make it difficult to continue.  We will really miss their food and we wish Mel the best in the future. Luckily, the storefront will not remain empty for long. It will soon be occupied by Russo's.

Thank you for all you have done for Park Slope's Fifth Avenue!
